Almost every substance gets denser when it freezes — but water gets LESS dense. That's why ice floats, and why fish can survive under a frozen pond.
Water molecules grip each other so tightly it creates "surface tension" — strong enough for some insects to walk right across a pond.
Water warms up and cools down slowly. That's why oceans keep coastal towns milder, and why a pool stays cold long after a hot day starts.
Scientists have found frozen water on Mars, on moons like Europa and Enceladus, and even inside comets zooming through space.
Grab a grown-up and some kitchen supplies. These are real science experiments you can do today.
You need: a zip-top bag, water, blue food coloring, tape, a sunny window.
You need: an empty bottle, coffee filter, sand, small gravel, cotton, muddy water.
You need: white carnations or celery, cups, water, food coloring.
You need: a penny, an eyedropper or straw, water, dish soap.
You need: two identical cups, water, a marker.
You need: paper, pencil, and sharp eyes.
Always have an adult help with cutting, hot water, or anything involving glass. Never drink water used in an experiment — even if it looks clean, filtering does not remove germs.
